A piece of Queen Victoria’s wedding cake from 1840 will be one of the main items of interest in an exhibition marking the Queen and Prince Philip’s 60th Wedding Anniversary.

Queen Victoria and Prince AlbertSeveral cakes were produced to celebrate the monarch’s wedding – one weighing over 300lbs (140Kg). Each piece of cake was supplied in a presentation box and distributed as gifts to the guests as well as to other British and European royals and dignitaries.

“The fact that pieces of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s wedding cake have survived in the original cardboard box is quite amazing” a spokeswoman said.

Gifts, precious jewels, telegrams and photographs, many of which will be on display for the first time, can be seen at the upcoming “The Royal Weddings 1840 to 1947″ exhibition. The exhibition is being held at Windsor Castle and will open on the 27th April.
