Kate Middleton and Prince William’s Shared Ancestry

Kate Middleton is a 14th cousin of Prince William according to genealogist Anthony Adolph.

Adolph, who presents the television show Gene Detectives on the BBC, says that the couple are distantly related via King Edward III (pictured). Kate is also related to Madonna’s husband, Guy Ritchie, via the same link.

Kate’s distant family also includes the pioneering American jazz musician, Frankie Fairfax. Kate and Frankie share a common ancestor in 16th century courtier, Sir Thomas Fairfax. Trombone player Frankie, the grandson of a slave, formed a band with Dizzy Gillespie and established the first black musicians’ union.
