Coming in very late here, especially as the William/Kate romance is supposed to be back on, but I agree that there appears to be a big element of social climbing within this family. It seems William was targetted from his first days at university and has been the target since then; unfortunately he seems to weak to escape from Kate for good. If he marries her I predict it will be a disaster as he is obviously not whole-hearted about her ... there have been other break-ups during their time at uni but these were never reported because of the agreement to give William privacy while he was there.
I'm not sure though if things would have been any different if Diana was alive. William was reportedly annoyed at her attempts to be involved in all aspects of his life while he was at Eton and also at her habit of unburdening her problems on him. In any case, he and Harry were always much closer to their father and to the rest of the royal family, just as they are today. They are Windsors through and through, with nothing of the Spencers in them (just as well, when one looks at the behaviour of their uncle Charles). So no, I don't thinkk William would have paid much attention to his mother if she were still alive; he'd listen but then go his own way. Sometimes we only learn the hard way and I think if he marries Kate he will certainly come to regret it.

Indeed, the mother is churlish and base. Clearly she is a social-climber and has the manners and class of a gnat. Sad, really. I'm sure if Diana were still alive, she would gently guide her son away from that family.

Kate modeling in her underwear was tacky from day one. Then rumours abound supposedly that she left her boyfriend to jump in Wiliam's University-flat and capture the kingdom,it all indicates just how tacky she is. Her mother's tackiness in chomping on gum at the Passing Out Ceremony in front of the Queen, shows what James Whitaker means when he says the mother is a problem.

Kates mum should have tried for Lord Freddie Windsor for Kate at least her and Princess Michael would have pushiness in common.

Yes, i had heard that Kate's 'Mum' was a big worry. Its is well known in 'the circle'' that Carole is VERY pushy, some would say to the point of being out & out rude about getting Kate to agree with whatever Will wants! Poor William.
