Commemorative Coin for Royal Wedding Anniversary
Britain’s Royal Mint has released gold and silver commemorative £5 coins to mark the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Diamond Wedding Anniversary.
The rare double portrait coin was created by reknowned sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley after a number of private sittings were held with the Queen and Prince Philip. “The sittings allowed me to experience the easy and relaxed conversation of the Queen and the Duke and gave me an opportunity to observe the animation and expression of their faces” Mr Rank-Broadley said.
The reverse of the coin was created by Royal Mint engraver, Emma Noble, who took her inspiration from the rose window at Westminster Abbey where the Queen and Prince Philip were married. “I started by sketching several features of the Abbey but became focussed on the rose window, for me it was the one element that really stood out and was easily recognisable. I am thrilled that my design has been chosen to commemorate such an important occasion in British Royal history.” she said.
The coins are only the fifth double-portrait coins produced by the Royal Mint, the last marking the Queen and Prince Philip’s 50th Wedding Anniversary.
The Queen and Prince Philip celebrate their Diamond Wedding Anniversary on the 20th November this year.
