Love Struggles in Celeb Land

PHOTO - Harry and Chelsy snuggle upFor those of a romantic bent, 2007 has been a tough old year. Every time we open a paper, another match made in heaven seems to have come crashing down to earth.

More than 80% think Prince William’s girlfriend Kate Middleton would be a great addition to the royal family - an addition that will surely be announced in the new year. Then again, a majority of people thought that Michelle McManus was the best person to win Pop Idol 2003, and look what happened to that. After a short-lived split in 2007, it seems the royal couple cannot bear to be apart - despite the paparazzi, the criticism and the in-laws that come with her role. That must be love.

It would be the celebration of a lifetime for romantics, royalists and Hello! magazine: a royal double wedding in 2008. Prince Harry and his Zimbabwean girlfriend Chelsy Davy also had a brief break-up in 2007, when she became fed up with his partying and with the weather in Leeds, where she was studying. Despite her coming under fire for the stupidity of dissing God’s own county, they appear to have forgiven each other and are now back on track. Better get the reception room booked at Boujis. There will be no marriage for Chelsy and Harry come 2008. He was supposed to join her on holiday to reconcile and didn’t. Besides, Harry can’t marry until he’s 25 and can’t marry until William does so that shoots his marriage right out of the water.

I doubt a marriage for Kate and William as well, though more than likely, the way things are going for him, there will be a proposal.

She’s a bit overconfident that he will marry her and it’s a bit of a turn off. It’s obvious he wants to wait and with her putting even more pressure on him, I’m sure it’s a bit uncomfortable.

No one should be pressured into marriage when they think they’re too young and he obviously wants to finish his military duties which is the smart thing to do. Trust me, trying to balance a marriage with a military career is challenging and probably too much for a man already facing an enormous amount of pressure.

Many girls (and the occasionally guy) send questions regarding who and how William and Harry can marry. There is an old law which dictates that in order to keep their place in the line of succession (ie if William wants to be king) that the girl must be 1) non-Catholic and 2) not divorced.

However, although not requirements it is likely that the girl will be Protestant, white, upper-class, and British. She will also have to have the strength of mind and character to deal with being in the limelight 24/7.

Harry will have a little more choice in his selection, but he like William will have to ask the Queen (or reigning monarch) for approval before marrying.

Also the questions about having an interracial marriage has been brought up in e-mails. It has not been common particularly in the British royal household and probably won’t happen anytime soon. Britain is a very traditional union and anything upon royal blood, they like to keep their race pure. Although if it did happen (i.e. if William was in an interracial relationship) he and the girl would be facing the Queen and the public opinion, and perhaps he may even lose his line of succession to the throne.

    …………………….

This is explanation was sent in by Mary (THANK YOU!) and I thought it did the job of explaining everything. So, here it is:

The law that dictates that those in succession to the throne cannot marry a Roman Catholic is not from the time of Henry VIII but from the time of William III and Mary II. It is called the Act of Settlement of 1701. The law was enacted because James II (Mary’s father) married a Catholic as his second wife. He soon had a son with her, and since he had only previously 2 (Protestant) daughters, Parliament and the people became worried that they would have to return to Catholicism. Their solution? Depose James II and put Mary and her husband William of Orange (also her first cousin) on the throne. William and Mary died childless and her sister Anne who ruled alone for twelve years also died childless. It was because of the Act of Settlement at that time, in 1714, that instead of going to Catholic members of the Royal Family who had stronger claims (Bonnie Prince Charlie, grandson of James II) the Hanovers of Germany (starting with George I) became the Kings and Queens of England. The present Royal family rules under this law and it is strictly enforced. For example, H.R.H. Prince Michael of Kent married a Catholic and is no longer in succession, he would have been about 20th. To make a long story short, Prince William cannot and will not marry a Catholic woman if he wants to keep the throne. When William is King he will be the head of the Church of England (Anglican), it would just look silly for him to marry outside of his faith.
