Their wedding will probably be scaled down a bit but I have no doubt that it will be a big public celebration and there will be many people hosting parties. But not to get too ahead of ourselves, we have to get that announcement over with first.

Prince Andrew’s wedding — that of a second son — would not normally have been quite as extravagant as it was. However, the monarchy had noted the tourism and economic boost that resulted from Charles’s wedding and was anxious to get another bounce from Andrew’s. I recall that at the time there was some grumbling about the costs, because previous weddings of younger sons hadn’t been quite so elaborate.

From a selfish standpoint — as someone interested in fashion — I have to say that a less-elaborate wedding would give Ms. Middleton a chance to choose a gown that would suit her pared-down style. Royal brides preparing for very formal and expensive state weddings have to think about dresses that will make a statement in vast venues and on television. I really don’t think that a billowy, heavily-embroidered, meringue-style design would suit Ms. Middleton, so I hope she chooses something slim and sophisticated. A frivolous issue, I know, but of course we’re all wondering what she’ll wear.
