princess-beatriceAs family resemblances go, theirs could hardly be closer. But would Queen Victoria be amused to know Princess Beatrice is her spitting image.

At 21, Bea looks almost exactly like Britain’s longest reigning monarch, her great great great great grandmama, when she was a similar age.

Beatrice’s mother, Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, is obsessed with Victoria and has even said she thinks she might be her reincarnation. She named Beatrice, the fifth in line to the throne, after Victoria’s ninth and youngest child, her fifth daughter.

    DM has a similar story up that’s kind of cute – it shows the pics of different members of the royal family and their resemblance to different ancestors, including William and Harry. It’s here if anyone wants to read it;

Surprisingly I like it better on Beatrice. Thanks for the link Sarah.

And her dieting, exercising and the self imposed ban on alcohol (which is fattening) is doing her wonders! She will always have the pear shape body, but with the above she can manage to have this look.

Now, I wish she can learn to close her mouth and play with her eyes (last photo).

    Me,
I agree with everything your wrote about Beatrice! She looks fantastic!

  • Shivs #6 - November 5, 2009 at 12:51 pm

I was just wondering will Beatrice ever be a full- time working royal or will she have to create a career for herself like the Philipses?? I just curious what role she’ll play if any!

  • Me #7 - November 5, 2009 at 1:09 pm

Shivs, I ask myself the same question. Because I think William and Harry, spouses and their children will be IT.

And then William’s children and so on.

  • Shivs #8 - November 5, 2009 at 3:11 pm

Me, If that’s the case she’s not in a great position and needs to think towards the future.I’m sure she is. Sort of reminds me of Miss Bates in ‘Emma’, her situation will seem to reduce as she advances in years. The same will happen to Harry’s children in time then..I guess. Sad thought!

I think Harry should stay in the Military and make that his long term career until age retirement, he doesn’t need to be in the front line, there are options within (the military) that he may very well be good at, but since he is still young and full of energy, I very much doubt he want’s or is willing to take the backstage at the moment. So I do believe after the latest ‘his hopes shattered’ article, he is in a cruz (crossroad).

Hopefully during or after University, Beatrice will find what she would be inspired to do career wise. Her personal life apparently is very stable, long steady relationship with Dave Clark, whom I really like, young, serious, mature, has a top job in Virgin Inc., – I’d say she landed the right guy.

I don’t know what to tell of Eugiene though, she is still so young. She reminds me a lot of Chelsy Davy. She looks bubbly, fun, the type of friend who’s got the never die endless energy for a ‘fun night out’ at the best spots in town! Yet.

And our William, if he gets cut short in the RAF/SARF, he seems to be prepared ‘optimistically’ to really start and take his royal duties. I had that feeling with his latest (various) interviews and announcements in opening/innauguration (Museum) and/or charities. This trip to NZ/Australia IMO is very significant. I’m so excited that he was commissioned by Her Majesty! Totally Awesome !
His eyes are very telling, seem to take things in a more mature stance. I hope!
And if I’m wrong, I just can’t see the future King in a private chopper with a private uniform saving people. Although I can totally see him in a RAF/SARF “military a la Nato exchange” or US/UK exchange with the US Coast Guards or any other Commonwealth country. Which is a possibility, wasn’t his father out in sea for the Navy for about almost 1 year at age 28-29 ?

Me and Shivs, I agree with you about Wills and Harry, their spouses and children will be the main Royal Family, but because Bea and Eugenie are both princesses, I think they will also carry out Royal duties just like the Queen’s cousins (and their spouses) Princess Alexandria, the Duke of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent, and Prince Michael of Kent are currently doing.

Although none of the Queen’s Royal cousins receive any sort of income monies from government, their travel expenses ONLY are covered by the government, and that’s ONLY when they are performing Royal duties.

They all have to support themselves and make a living the best way they can, but still fulfill Royal duties without any financial compensation other than their travel costs to and from whatever location their Royal duties are taking place.

If, for whatever reason, one of the Royal cousins has to go overseas to perform a Royal duty, their trip is subsidised by the Queen herself.

I think that’s what’s going to happen in the future with Wills, Harry, Bea and Eugenie. The cousins of the current monarch are all over the age of 60, and eventually they will no longer be with us.

Wills and Harry are only two people, with spouses that’s four. Four people won’t be enough to carry out all of the Royal duties, Bea and Eugenie will be needed. HM might even decide to do the same thing with their spouses that she did with her sister Princess Margaret’s husband Lord Snowdon, which is to give the spouses a title so that Bea and Eugenie’s children would be titled Lords and Ladies even if they won’t be princes or princesses.

Only Wills’ and Harry’s children will be princes and princesses, and that’s only when Charles becomes King.

The rule is the children of the sons of the Monarch are titled HRH Prince ____ and HRH Princess____.

As Charles and Andrew are the sons of the Monarch, their children are princes and princesses and are addressed as HRH.

Prince Edward’s children could have been Prince James and Princess Louise as well, but Edward decided not to allow his children have the HRH even though they were entitled to it.

I think the reason Edward did that was because the RF is very aware that they needed to reduce the numbers of actual princes and princesses.

I think that’s why only four of HM’s eight grandchildren are HRH. Princess Anne went one step further when she and Captain Phillips refused any sort of title upon their marriage, that’s why Peter and Zara aren’t Lord Peter and Lady Zara like Edward and Sophie’s children and Princess Margaret’s children.

I think that was decided upon by Princess Anne before Peter and Zara were born, it could be that even back then she had discussed the situation with her mother and determined that the number of Royal HRH would have to be reduced in future generations.

I think they are Prince James and Princess Louise whether or not they use the title.

  • ginger #12 - November 5, 2009 at 6:10 pm

mapleleaf – great post but could you please explain to me why PW and PH’s children will not be a prince or princess until PC becomes king? I don’t think I understand. Not only am I from the USA but I am from south Georgia (not the side of the state that will marry their family members). Thanks

  • mapleleaf #13 - November 5, 2009 at 7:01 pm

Phoebe I agree with you, no Letters Patent were issued that denied Lady Louise and little Lord James their princely status, but Prince Edward himself stated at the time Lady Louise was born that he had made the decision that none of his children would ever be styled HRH.

Ginger, the children of the Monarch are all styled HRH and are princes and princesses; but with regards to the GRANDCHILDREN of the Monarch, only the children of the Monarch’s sons can be HRH’s and princes and princesses.

And even the male-line grandchildren’s children ( the great-grandchildren) are not HRH, and they are not referred to as ‘prince’ or ‘princess’.

Instead the Monarch’s male-line great-grandchildren will carry the title of ‘Lord’ and ‘Lady’.

If HM follows normal tradition ( :P and somehow I think she will) then Wills and Harry will both be granted Dukedoms when they get married.

At that time Wills will become ‘HRH Prince William, Duke of XXXXX’ and his children will be ‘Lord XXXX’ and ‘Lady XXXX’. His wife will be ‘HRH Princess William, Duchess of XXXXX’

The same goes for Harry as well. Harry will be ‘HRH Prince Henry, Duke of XXXXX’ and his wife will be ‘HRH Princess Henry, Duchess of XXXXX’ and the children will be Lord or Lady XXXX.

It’s the same way that things are with Prince and Princess Michael and their two children, Lord Freddy and Lady Gabrielle.

Prince Michael and his wife are styled ‘HRH Prince Michael of Kent’ and ‘HRH Princess Michael of Kent’ but their children are only Lord and Lady, they are not HRH and they are not ‘Prince Freddy’ or ‘Princess Gabrielle’.

If Wills and/or Harry becomes a father before Charles becomes King, then their children will be the great-grandchildren of the current Monarch, and even though they’re of the male-line, they will be styled ‘Lord’ or ‘Lady’ only.

But when Charles becomes King, then both William and Harry’s children will be male-line grandchildren of a Monarch, and as such, the children’s styles will change to ‘HRH Prince XXXX’ and ‘HRH Princess XXXX’ for the rest of their lives.

In the case of Harry’s children, once Charles is King Harry’s children will be ‘Prince’ and ‘Princess’ their entire lives, and the wife/wives of Harry’s son(s) will be styled ‘HRH Princess XXXX’, but Harry’s grandchildren will not.

:P Of course, they could always do what they did in the middle ages, and Harry’s grandchildren could marry Wills’ grandchildren. That would give them all the ‘HRH’ style.

*Before anyone gets outraged, I’m just kidding ;) .

But Will’s grandchildren and Harry’s grandchildren would all be second cousins, and legally allowed to marry in the UK.

Sorry, I should’ve said that Prince Edward’s son Lord James is also ‘James, Viscount Severn’.

It has been said that when Prince Phillip passes, HM is going to make Prince Edward the Duke of Edinburgh, and the Earldom of Wessex will then revert to the Crown.

When Prince Andrew passes, because he has no male heirs the Dukedom of York will revert to the crown as well. As the Dukedom of York is usually granted to the second son of the Sovereign, it would normally go to Harry, but by the time Andrew is no longer here Harry will probably have been a Duke for years already.

So after Andrew is gone, the Dukedom of York will revert to the crown and if William is King at that time, he would be able to bestow it on his second son.

  • Phoebe #15 - November 5, 2009 at 7:28 pm

It seems to me that James and Louise can call themselves whatever they want when they come of age, and it would be their right to do so.

    sojourner,
LOL! I really like the titles you have given us! :)

Let us hope that we have many, many royal issues to research, analyze, gain inside knowledge of, or understand from a peerage perspective in the next few months and next year!
