Prince William proved his star power Monday as thousands of New Zealanders cheered the second-in-line to the throne in the face of a small republican demonstration.

The 27-year-old prince opened a new Supreme Court Building in Wellington during the second day of his first official trip overseas on behalf of his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The number of spectators swelled to between 3,000 and 4,000 as the prince left the building after the hour-long opening ceremony and walked among the crowd, shaking hands and greeting enthusiastic onlookers. (via AFP)

Prince William in security scare as DJ gatecrashes barbecue at New Zealand prime minister\’s house

The incident occurred 20 minutes before William arrived at the \’traditional Kiwi\’ party, held to introduce him to the great and the good of New Zealand\’s capital city. It will come as a terrible embarrassment to the local authorities who have adopted a low-key approach to policing in order to allow the future king to meet as many members of the public as possible. …read

really? I think The Queen looks great too.

Here’s James Whitaker’s take on William’s royal role-

    http://tinyurl.com/ydgz68g

This guy is always quick to dismiss Kate. I guess it’s easy to do that when you really don’t know the person of subject. He and many other people like doing that to Kate but once they see her start playing a royal role along side William will they recognize Kate is her own person and will bring her own special qualities to her royal career.

  • Mathilde #15 - January 18, 2010 at 3:03 pm

What a pathetic snob James Whittaker is! I was told by someone who met him that Whittaker was an unpleasant person. He hardly can say any good word about anyone. So I never trust his opinion about anything.

  • Phoebe #16 - January 18, 2010 at 3:42 pm

Isn’t it so nice that he and the Queen see eye-to-eye.

  • Phoebe #17 - January 18, 2010 at 5:45 pm

    Sarcasm.

  • really? #18 - January 18, 2010 at 6:22 pm

He and the courtiers see eye to eye is my take. He voices what a lot of people close to the Queen think – and the Queen does take advice from them for the good of the monarchy.

Whitaker believed he made Charles and Diana marry !! With all his good press!!!

He believes he has influence which I don’t believe he has but I do believe he has good contacts very close to the top and that ‘his’ opinion is there’s

I think there is a move to shove kate out by courtiers BUT I believe this would onlly backfire and make PW all the more willing to marry her
he is determined — wilful as the Queen put it

  • Rman #19 - January 18, 2010 at 6:43 pm

    Good Evening,

really? James Whitaker is a former royal photographer that would like another Diana. Everyone in their right mind should know that there will never be another Diana and that is what he think William’s wife should be like. Kate is not trying to be like Diana and I’m sure the royals would like Kate to be herself.

The royal courtiers are not trying to shove Kate out because they all like her. If that was the case, Kate would have never been seen with the royals so many times like she have. There are so many signs that Kate has been embraced by the royals and royal courtiers but people don’t take the time to see it. The Queen honored her grandson by inviting Kate to the most important event on the royal calendar, The Order of the Garter ceremony. That was The Queen’s way of recognizing William & Kate’s relationship. No one is shoving Kate out, the problem is that some have grown bored of the couple because the length of the relationship and the lack of knowledge about this woman that William seem to so crazy about. People just have to wait for the announcement and give her chance.

  • jj #20 - January 18, 2010 at 6:46 pm

Sigh I really can’t wait for an announcement to come. I’m over all of the waiting, cloak and dagger, opinions from sources who may or may not know what is going on.

I want to see a coach and a pretty wedding dress.

  • Rman #21 - January 18, 2010 at 6:52 pm

LOL, it’s coming JJ. Keep your fingers crossed. I can’t wait for the burst of excitement on this site.

  • Lisa #22 - January 18, 2010 at 7:39 pm

I second that,jj! Enough of the speculation already, bring on the wedding cake!

nice work on the live action

As I said RMAN it is inconsequential what the Courtiers think as it is william who has to make that decision to ask Kate.

My feeling is though that the court has worked against her.

  • Wm4King. #28 - January 18, 2010 at 9:56 pm

William is a great hit with the Kiwis. He has such charm that all the pictures show delightful expressions on his face.

Whitaker lost his main job as a royal reporter because he was so far off target most of the time. He is a snob exactly as you say and wants William to marry a princess. He has zero contacts with the Firm but lets on that he does. In fact he is one of the few reporters avoided by anyone to do with Harry or William because he is overly critical of both of them. They don’t like him either.

From what I can tell, the entire trip was a huge success! Mr Whitaker is indeed a snob and has spoken very badly about Kate to whoever will listen. All these would be know it all’s are starting to annoy me!

  • Rman #31 - January 18, 2010 at 10:06 pm

    dasi thanks for the link.

Well really? we will see. I just don’t think they have. I think what Kate has been dealing with is the British tabloids that nearly drove Diana & Sarah crazy. Things are totally different from those days though, Kate is dealing with the media that is way more advanced, with YouTube, online news sites, blogs, forums etc. The media has pretty much worked against her because they don’t know her. If the courtiers were doing it, if would have had a bad effect on the relationship and as we can see, the relationship between William & Kate is stronger than ever and he still brings her around his family. Also from those pictures we saw last summer of Kate being kissed/greeted by William’s official team at the charity polo event, you can tell that they are pretty much behind her and not working against her.

Well Lisa, Ellen is great and I guess watching William’s arrival is not all that and a bag of chips.

  • anglophile #32 - January 18, 2010 at 10:19 pm

He may be a bit of a snob, but he understands how the Palaces, the Courtier’s and the Queen work.

Whitaker semi-retired on his own after a long, fruitful career covering the Royals. He is one of the few reporters who could constantly, get into private tents with Royals for years.

Much of what he reported later was found to be accurate, such as Diana’s eating disorder when everyone said he was making it up. He had spoke directly to Diana’s sister who told him but he could not reveal his source.

He was invited to garden parties at the Palace, where other reporters were not. He still has his sources with the old guard courtiers around the Queen.

Good luck to William on his tour, he is doing a wonderful job.

  • Mathilde #33 - January 18, 2010 at 10:23 pm

Prince William has landed in Sydney for a whistlestop three-day visit to Australia.

  • Rman #34 - January 18, 2010 at 10:29 pm

anglophile, James may still have his sources but I think it’s wrong from him to diss William’s girlfriend without even knowing her and then go on to make it seem like the royals don’t even like her. We know that’s not true so that’s the point i’m getting at.

  • Lisa #35 - January 18, 2010 at 10:57 pm

Well, he may have his sources but I know one thing…he can call Kate whatever he wants now but I hope he chokes when he has to call her “your highness”!

this article is interesting. They could have a point that maybe William could have done some media interviews to generate interest. It’s also interesting that they acknowledge that the visit would have had a lot more sparkle if Kate had been there. Sometimes I think his advisors really need a fresh new approach to the modern world, bacause right now it looks like the old boys club with lots of aging gentlemen….
